The Loco Shed, Echuca

Working in collaboration with Brandrick Architects and on behalf of the Loco Shed Limited, Acre Town Planning successfully secured planning approval for the adaptive reuse and redevelopment of the historic Echuca Loco Shed, a State heritage-listed former railway engine shed located within the Echuca Rail Precinct.

The project transforms the vacant heritage building into a multifunctional events and exhibition venue incorporating interpretive sound and light experiences, community event space, and a new café connected via a contemporary glass link. Designed to celebrate the site's rich railway heritage, the redevelopment provides a viable long-term future for one of Echuca's most significant historic structures.

Acre managed the planning approval process for this complex development, which involved navigating a range of planning challenges including development within the Transport Zone, integration with an operational rail environment, heritage considerations, car parking waivers, signage approvals, and the variation of an existing easement. The project also required coordination with multiple specialist consultants and government stakeholders, including VicTrack and Heritage Victoria.

By securing planning approval for the adaptive reuse of the former railway engine shed, Acre helped facilitate the conservation of an important heritage asset while providing a clear pathway for the project's future delivery.
